With respect to Kelli Linville, after listening to her and Dan Pike in numerous candidates' forums, I don't believe she has shown respect for her opponent, repeatedly attacking him.
There is a significant difference between the two candidates for the nonpartisan position of Whatcom County executive on important county issues.
Here's an opinion about Occupy Bellingham protesters camping in Maritime Heritage Park, from Bellingham editorial cartoonist Rik Dalvit.
I understand why so many people are supporting Kelli Linville for mayor.
The position of mayor of Ferndale is a tough job, but I believe we have the right person doing the job and doing it very well.
The three agencies invested in pursuing public comment on the environmental issues concerning Cherry Point's Gateway Pacific Terminal project are doing the right thing.
I believe the supporters of the Occupy Wall Street protests include the Democratic Party, Communist Party USA, American Nazi Party, SEIU, United Federation of Teachers, Transport Workers Union Local, Islamic groups, MoveOn.org, Michael Moore and all the left wing, government-knows-best crowd. Some are calling for all-out revolution.
In Stephen Covey's book, "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People," we read that in order to be so, one must: Be proactive; begin with the end in mind; put first things first; think win/win; seek first to understand, then be understood; synergize; and sharpen the saw.
As the election nears, the arrows of twisted truth begin to fly through the air.
Going back to 2007-2010, our County Council saw lots of action between homeowners and our county health department trying to work on state regulations for on-site sewage systems.
For the past eight years, I believe port Commissioner Jim Jorgensen has served his constituents well.
I have heard Cathy Lehman (candidate for Bellingham City Council, Ward 3) say many times that "No community exists in isolation from its neighbors," and, having worked with Cathy as a colleague and organizer, I know how strong her drive is to make the town in which we live a better and more resilient one.
This letter is in support of Kelli Linville for mayor.
Two years ago, because Bellingham voters did not turn out and vote in the County Council election, I believe we wound up with a regressive, conservative majority.
I first met Cathy Lehman several years ago when we were both on the board of the Downtown Renaissance Network.
The current majority on the Whatcom County Council has instituted what I believe to be fiscally misguided policies designed to promote urban sprawl.
I met Jack Louws when he was mayor of Lynden.
I wish to add a footnote to the Oct. 28 article "Local trio crunches estimates of cargo port jobs."
It's very difficult to express in 200 words how qualified I believe Kelli Linville is for the position of mayor of Bellingham.
In the race for the Whatcom County Council District 1 seat, I believe there is one clear choice.
As voters, we try to ignore the political hype and look at the facts. Who is best qualified to represent us?
I have worked for nearly 15 years to broaden landowners' stewardship of the land to include community values of recovering shellfish harvest areas and reestablishing habitat for listed salmon species.
Dan Pike is among this country's top mayors.
In the recent article, "For families on edge, getting by is getting harder," a single mom's struggle to provide for herself and her 13-year-old son is discussed.
Rik Dalvit's cartoon, "Not part of the protest" makes a good point.
This regards the article in the Bellingham Herald headlined "Settlement reached in anthrax death lawsuit," which is about the settlement for the death of a tabloid photo editor during the 2001 anthrax mailings.
Seattle is apparently permitting Occupy protesters to camp overnight in a public park.
Costco, in spending $22 million in support of Initiative 1183, has demonstrated to me a callous disregard for the hundreds of small-property owners from whom the state currently leases its liquor stores.
I support Kelli Linville for Bellingham mayor for the following reasons:
Decisions by the members of our county council will be crucial to ensuring a complete and objective analysis of the environmental, public health and economic impacts of a massive shipping terminal and the coal trains that will feed it.
I am a small business owner.
Last year, I had a great deal of respect for our mayor.
I am writing in support of the re-election of our Mayor Dan Pike.
It is to our great regret that our residence in the county prevents us from voting on behalf of Dan Pike's re-election to the office he has done such honorable justice to.
I urge people to vote in favor of red light cameras.
Last week, the story of the coal terminal proposed by SSA Marine received widespread attention with coverage from both National Geographic and NPR.
I was amused to read the deluge of letters to the editor last week, claiming the Pike campaign is distorting Linville's position on the coal terminal.
I was a Whatcom County deputy for 30 years.
I like Pike.
In the race for county executive, the choice is clear.
About the coal train issue: I am concerned that a mayor of Bellingham may be elected who sees the mayor's role as mitigating and cooperating with what may be presented as a fait accompli.
Kelli Linville has spent the past months criticizing Pike on the coal terminal issue. As recently as June 3, The Bellingham Herald reported that Linville believed "it's too soon to oppose or support the project."
The choice in this year's mayoral election seems pretty clear to me.
I believe the ability to work, live, play and socially participate in a free and private manner, in Whatcom County and Bellingham is being seriously eroded. That's what happens when we elect officials who fail to protect those rights held within our city/county charters and our state/federal constitutions.
I am casting my vote for Dan Pike for one simple reason: the man has backbone.
Choose a positive future for Bellingham!
I have known Kelli Linville for almost 40 years. During that time, I believe she has consistently demonstrated the ability to identify problems and find solutions for them. Linville has a strong ethical base and a sense of fair play that I admire. Over the years I have watched her deal with thorny issues straight on. That takes courage. It has never been "My way or the highway" but instead she has critically looked at the situations, the legal structures pertaining to them and talked with people with views on both sides of the issue to build consensus and support. I believe she is fiscally conservative and would not support decisions that would place Bellingham in debt. Bellingham needs Linville as mayor. Let's go forward with healthy leadership.
Public accolades given to Sheriff Bill Elfo during this election cycle have been numerous and are, I believe, certainly well-deserved. The unanimous support from all local chiefs of police further substantiates Elfo's reputation as a leader and partner in the local law enforcement community. The Whatcom County Deputy Sheriff's Guild endorsement demonstrates the collective confidence in Elfo's leadership. He has cultivated mutual support and interaction with state and federal law enforcement organizations.
Responding to Doug Ericksen's statement published Oct. 20, I do not believe that Ericksen is capable of the leadership he purports to have. While he suggests that he represents the interests of his constituents, I believe he actually panders to his power base in the county.
I believe education has been all but abandoned as our citizens turn away from their future and focus on the now. Washington state colleges are facing huge budget cuts, promoting recruitment of out-of-state students. In the 2011-13 budget report by the Higher Education Coordinating Board, it is explained that the budget approved by Legislature (which went against the board's recommendations) represented a 25 percent decrease in state support for public colleges as compared to the 2007-09 approved budget, whereas the state budget has only decreased by 3.5 percent. This newest budget required substantive tuition increases for all colleges to maintain what the Higher Education Coordinating Board deemed a "survival" budget. The three largest Washington colleges required a 16 percent increase in tuition revenues. With out-of-state students paying 15-80 percent more than in-state, how could our universities deny them?
Unfortunately, I believe we have a "dog ate my homework" mayor.
Kelli Linville is my choice for our next mayor of Bellingham. I knew of her good work for us in Olympia but since she has been running for mayor, I have come to have increasing respect for her. I believe that she will appoint and/or retain the best people to run our city. The mayor needs to direct and also encourage input from department heads in order for them to do the best for all of us. Linville will establish a whole team at city hall who will work together to help solve the Lake Whatcom water issue, Waterfront development direction and all the other myriad city issues we face. I encourage you too to vote for Linville for mayor.
Repeatedly, Kelli Linville's been heard stating that she supports a multipurpose pier at Cherry Point. I believe her actions support that claim by her efforts as Washington state representative to influence Peter Goldmark, Washington state land commissioner, to move this project forward.
Don't be fooled by what I believe are smoke-and-mirror tactics regarding the coal trains that Mayor Dan Pike is pushing. The mayor of Bellingham has no regulatory powers over this issue. Look at things the mayor has authority over.
It should come as no surprise that times are tough for a lot of people. What should surprise responsible people is that the city of Ferndale is building what I believe is a palatial police station without a revenue stream to pay for it. Mayor Gary Jensen and the majority of the City Council apparently believe the U.S. economy will come roaring back at some as-yet-unknown time and the increased sales tax revenue will pay for their new police station. There is no Plan B for dealing with a constricting economy and reduced revenues. I find this appalling and irresponsible. What is needed are fiscal conservatives in city hall. Lloyd Zimmerman is my choice for a fiscally conservative mayor. While on the city council, he consistently voted against what I believe were wasteful capital projects. As mayor, I am confident he will restore fiscal sanity to the city of Ferndale. I know Lloyd and I have never heard him belittle his opponents at a public meeting. These are tough times and we don't need divisive leadership that bankrupts Ferndale. I believe Lloyd Zimmerman will refocus Ferndale, away from paranoid profligate spending and towards fiscal responsibility.
I believe Mayor Dan Pike is a strong, competent leader. We need to re-elect him. His leadership record has always been on our side, whether it be public safety, jobs or community values.
I urge citizens to cast their vote to re-elect Jim Jorgenson port commissioner. I believe Jorgenson has the critical skills that we will most need in the next four years at the port.
As a young downtown small-business owner and resident, I'm absolutely ecstatic at the prospect of having Cathy Lehman on city council because she's not only exceptionally qualified, but there will also finally be someone that represents me in Bellingham local government. I've known Lehman for years and our lives are quite similar in that we are both WWU graduates that moved here over a decade ago, fell in love with and are now willing hostages of this city, and both want to see it thrive as there's no other place we plan to call home. I believe Lehman understands that strong local businesses, thriving arts and music communities and a well-supported network of non-profit agencies make, and will continue to make, Bellingham one of the best places to live in the world. She understands that downtown needs to continue to attract young, talented, bright, creative people with things such as a busy nightlife and music community, but also needs to be a place where people of all generations want to live, play and work (not to mention, be able to find the well-paying jobs they need). I believe Lehman has the long-term vision, passion, and smarts to help keep Bellingham on the path to being the sustainable, supportive, beautiful and economically viable place that I plan to be a part of for decades to come.
Most Whatcom County residents, including myself, are not that familiar with the county council nor personally know any of the council members. Yet, over the last three years, I've had occasion to become acquainted with Barbara Brenner as well as other council members.
Please vote yes on Bellingham Initiative 1, requiring the removal of automated traffic safety cameras. Say yes to traffic-safety solutions that I believe really work. Say no to corporations like ATS and Goldman Sachs. Say no to corporatism. Say no to the mayor and City Council.
I believe you have the choice to retain two excellent school directors for the Ferndale School District.
In a time of fiscal crisis, I believe the County Council majority intends to waste $250,000 of our tax money. After three years of good-faith work toward protecting Lake Whatcom, the only source of drinking water for 90,000 people, four members of the council are pulling the plug. Trouble is, DNR spent the money, and we promised to pay them back.
I have and continue to support Barbara Brenner for County Council because: I trust her integrity and her intelligence; she does her own research and comes to her own independent conclusions; she has compassion, which I believe most people in political life either lose or abandon in their quest for power.
Once again, I believe the GOP is seeking to relax government regulations by using national security as a guise, and this time the environment will pay for it. Ignoring environmental regulations is not the answer to illegal immigration. In fact, a report by the GAO found that many border patrol agents feel their ability to do their job is unaffected by environmental protections. So why is this legislation necessary? I think it is important that we take a look at who is really benefiting from this bill. What companies and people will increase profits from being able to easily degrade the environment?
Though I don't usually get into politics, I must support Kelli Linville for mayor. I have known her since she was born, and I believe she would do a great job for Bellingham. I applaud her ability.
As a community activist and concerned citizen, I urge all undecided voters to vote for a competent and experienced legislator with years of experience with state budgets and Whatcom County issues. Kelli Linville is a Bellingham native with, I believe, vision, integrity and a commitment to the legislative process. She has the ability to negotiate with those of differing opinions, the knowledge of state and local laws to know what Bellingham can and cannot do to legislate train activity and the contacts to utilize Bellingham's bargaining powers.
Offers thoughts on election issues
I support Sam Crawford for county council. I believe he is a hard-working and caring individual. He has done a great job for us and will continue pressing on for our good. He does not have a divided interest as I believe does his opponent. Sam is fair and balanced.
I have known Kelli Linville for a number of years, and I have always respected her as a person of integrity who gives straight answers to my questions. Her responses are never good for "sound bites." I appreciate this because I know that the issues she addresses aren't simple or adequately responded to with a single yes or no. Thus, I greatly resent the attempt in the current campaign to paint Kelli as secretly in favor of the coal train because she has striven to be wholly inclusive in her answer.
In this time of high unemployment, home foreclosures and increased poverty, I believe Sheriff Elfo is running his campaign for re-election like a typical lifelong bureaucrat. He's spending big. After all, it's not coming out of his pocket.
Following the mayoral debate hosted at Western Washington University, several students told me the coal port had been the defining issue of the forum. They said that while Kelli Linville says she's against the coal terminal, Dan Pike had demonstrated his opposition by taking decisive action against the port.
It is heartening to see that Occupy Bellingham will build on the success of Occupy Wall Street by camping in Maritime Heritage Park. The Wall Street protest has already resulted in a 25 percent drop in corporate greed, according to a Forbes magazine poll of the 1 percent. Surely giving money away will be next. The Bellingham group has broadened its horizons to include coal trains, the environment and a call for total self-sufficiency including producing one's own food, clothing and shelter. I can hardly wait to see cattle, sheep and chickens in the park, and a 25 percent drop in coal trains and the environment. You go, protesters!
I've heard "why are you protesting" about banking so much lately, I thought I'd give an example of what I believe is wrong.
I feel I must respond to the Oct. 16 letter in The Bellingham Herald. I agree with the writer that people who are offended by the words niggardly and renege as being racist are ignorant. What is not ignorance is thinking that the Confederate flag represents racism. It does represent racism to millions of Americans of color, because it represents that portion of our nation that went to war over the issue of slavery.
"I enjoy my dividends," said one respondent about the protest against Wall Street greed. Many people who reap dividends may echo that statement.
In reference to the Oct. 29 front page article "WWU administrator faces ethics probe," reading between the lines it appears to me as though Ms. Copetas is the victim of some professional whiners and trouble-makers who, unfortunately, are accorded much too much attention at the university.
Comparing the Tea Party crowd with the Occupy Whatever Site group is an interesting exercise.
Cathy Watson is our friend and an active supporter of our community. Cathy works with the American Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, and the Ferndale Food Bank as well as various other local community projects. I believe she is a focused, honest, intelligent and balanced individual who works well with others in any situation. Cathy's goal is to participate in the process of growing our community in the best possible way for all of our citizens. Vote for Cathy for the future of Ferndale.
This is another Bob Hall than the one whose letter to the editor was published Oct. 21. I'm the Bob Hall who renovates and rents out historic properties in the downtown. I too have been a keen observer for over 35 years in the local political scene.
I was torn on my decision of whether to vote Dan Pike or Kelli Linville for mayor of Bellingham, until recently when I had an opportunity to talk with each of them. I learned on Oct. 12 from Dan Pike he's definitely supporting the citizens against the coal terminal -Gateway Pacific, proposed by SSA Marine, Peabody Coal at Cherry Point that I believe would greatly hurt our environment, economy and marine life. When I spoke to Kelli Linville on Oct. 19, she stated she supports a multi-use terminal - including coal. I was shocked, disappointed.
I urge voters to select Pete Kremen for county council. Pete has a long and exceptional record of public service that we are all familiar enough with already. But you might not be aware of what I find to be disturbing positions of Pete's adversary, Tony Larson.
Thankfully, the Whatcom County Council is, I believe, coming to their senses about the advisability of acquiring the 8,700 acres around Lake Whatcom. While those concepts of ownership and control of the land around the lake are admirable, I believe it is time to step back and look at where we are as a county, state and nation and realize that our wish list of things that we might like to do is way too long and we must prioritize how we spend our money. The merry-go-round has stopped and we must stop spending money that we do not have.
At a recent forum, Kelli Linville was asked how she would pay for more police officers at a time when money is scarce and crime is down 24 percent. What other programs and services would she cut to pay for that? I don't believe she answered the question. Instead, she said that perception is what's important. If people perceive their neighborhoods to be unsafe, then just add police, she said.
I believe there are many reasons to support Kelli Linville for mayor: She is thoughtful, considerate, intelligent and responsible, to name a few. I believe Kelli won't rush to judgment, nor will she bend to special interest groups. It really comes down to a matter of trust. Can we trust her to articulate a vision for Bellingham that moves us forward? Can we trust her to serve the public interest? Can we trust her to be truthful with the facts, whether it's on the coal terminal she opposes, or on complicated land use decisions that deserve an open and honest forum? We can, and we should. Let's restore the integrity I believe we need at city hall and elect Kelli mayor.
Kelli Linville is skilled in the ways and means of Olympia. During her tenure there, the governor appointed Linville's husband, Will Roehl, to the Growth Management Hearings Board. Roehl's salary was $93,571 in 2010.
I'm supporting the traffic cameras because I know that costly tickets change poor driving habits. Just ask my husband. A few months ago he was ticketed $124 for talking on his cell phone while driving. No matter what the circumstances are now, you won't see him doing that again.
Every summer as children look forward to the coming school year and plan to participate in various athletic activities, their parents hopefully remember to schedule a sports physical (otherwise known as the pre-participation physical evaluation).
I received Kelli Linville's flyer in the mail. It reads, "I do not support exporting coal or any other non-renewable resource. If the proposed SSA Marine terminal is proven to be a sole-purpose coal pier then I oppose it."
In the 1950s the legendary geologist Dr. A. J. Love of the United States Geological Survey discovered large deposits of uranium ore in the Powder River Basin, Wyoming - the source of the coal to be shipped through here if SSA Marine has its way. This issue is not being addressed in the public debate over the proposed coal terminal. I believe the potential for uranium-laced coal to be transported through our county raises a number of questions that should be addressed before approval of this coal terminal project.
For anyone who has not voted by this time, I ask that you consider the following. I believe Dan Pike has proven with his record that he stands out as a leader worth following for another four years.
What can we learn from Hallow-weekend?
We worked with Kelli Linville a number of times when she was our state legislator and we are excited at the prospect of having her as our next mayor. We believe she brings a perfect balance of skills and experience: a commitment to an open, responsive government, extensive budgeting experience (she served as the state House ways and means chair), and a strong environmental record.
I believe the Occupy Wall Street crowd anger is misdirected. How can you be upset with Wall Street when the ones giving them the keys to the economy are our state government and officials like Christine Gregoire? Our state pension fund for state employees at its high of $67 billion was invested primarily in - you guessed it - Wall Street.
The best thing people who are occupying Wall Street could do is take down their REI tents and camping gear and sell their L.L. Bean clothing. Take just 10 percent of the money they waste each day and start feeding the starving around the world. Stop feeding Wall Street. Remembering all of America is the 1 percent; the other 99 percent don't have a home to lose, a crummy job or a lemon in the garage and have never even purchased so much as a gallon of gas.
Kelli Linville will be a strong leader as mayor.
It appears that the Bank of America now has a private armed guard on the corner of Holly Street and Cornwall Avenue. His presence raises several issues, the first of which is the problem of the "rules of engagement" under which he operates with respect to his pistol. To what extent can he draw that pistol? What specific acts may occasion the use of deadly force? What authority does he have with respect to citizens walking on the public sidewalk where he stands? Can he ask for identification from those entering the bank? Can he search packages? Purses? Do customers have to obey his directions?
The Gateway Pacific Terminal project at Cherry Point is predicted to create approximately 1,200 jobs. I feel that this data is biased due to the fact that it came from economists hired by SSA Marine, the shipping company that proposed the terminal, and especially because no negative externalities were included in their calculations.
I am casting my vote for Dan Pike for one simple reason: the man has backbone.
We were thinking about the economy's impact on families and businesses as we met with candidates from several high-profile races in the Nov. 8 general election.
Anyone who watches the evening news knows that Congress is desperately searching for budget cuts to comply with the August debt-ceiling agreement.
Cock-a-doodle-doo. Now the city council wants to regulate rooster crowing. I love to hear that sound in my neighborhood, but if the council gets its way, this classic sound will be no more. I understand one citizen in this city of 75,000 complained. Now we have one (me) that likes the crowing. The vote is 1:1. Actually, my son and his family live next to some acreage in Edgemoor. They would vote to let the roosters crow.
Enter a magical world where big problems simply disappear because there's no money to fix them.
Salmon are on the same downward trend as the amount and quality of their habitat, and until we turn that around, there's little hope for their recovery.
Libraries share. It's what they do.
A recent court decision needlessly threatens the economic viability of Washington's forests and forest industries. It places both large and small forest landowners and our partners in manufacturing, in Whatcom County and across the state, at risk, while threatening thousands of jobs and billions in annual payroll. That is why business and labor leaders are joining forces to call on Congress to correct this misguided decision.
World War II, Korea and Vietnam employed large numbers of men and women. The majority were drafted, called in service of the nation. A few stayed in the military, becoming the professionals, keepers of institutional knowledge, trainers who could pass on experience in engaging the enemy, or making sure that equipment was there when needed. This core of professionals is in no way unlike their counterparts in corporate America - except the pay, and the contracts they signed that obligated them to travel at a moment's notice, and not quit just because they felt like it.
My 89-year-old dad, a World War II Navy Seabee veteran, asked me to write something about Veterans Day and take it over to the newspaper. I said OK, but I was thinking, "Oh, great. What am I ever going to say. I'm not a veteran."
When she unveiled devastating budget cuts one year ago, Gov. Chris Gregoire was resigned, though saddened. When she had to do it again last week, she was mostly just angry.
I am honored to have been chosen to be the Dean of the Woodring College of Education at Western Washington University. I feel fortunate to work alongside an incredibly talented student body as well as dedicated faculty and staff committed to making a difference in social service agencies and schools in the region and state.
I live in Whatcom County and have two adopted sons from Haiti. I wish to express my shock at the way complete strangers, in an effort to be friendly, talk to my children. While they are bending over backwards to ensure everyone present know they are not racist, they come close to interrogating them.
The connection between illegal immigration and agriculture has been blindingly obvious for decades, but apparently not obvious enough for some.
Lawmakers will return to Olympia on Nov. 28, in hopes of coming to a speedy agreement on how to fill a $2 billion funding gap in the state's two-year operating budget.
I'm curious about the stability of the cliffs upon which the coal port and coal storage facility will sit.
U.S. Sen. Maria Cantwell is absolutely right when she says the federal government must not wait until an estimated 20 million tons of floating tsunami debris from Japan begins arriving on U.S. shorelines.
How bad do the state's looming budget cuts look?
Cash-strapped lawmakers who are looking for ways to streamline state government operations must take a hard look at state Auditor Brian Sonntag's latest performance audit on state mailing costs.
NEWS TRIBUNE
A letter was published unhappy with "Occupy." I suggest people "against" "Occupy" join us and make some discoveries. To guess about what is happening and who is demonstrating causes uneducated bias.
I have often thought that the younger generation should be incensed about what their parents and grandparents, etc., are doing to their futures. Multi-trillion dollar debts, irresponsible deficits, bank bail-outs, automaker takeovers, corporatocracy, unionocracy, kakistocracy at the expense of the next generation, small wonder you are incensed! But you're targeting the wrong players.
State lawmakers hoping to pay for state parks with user fees - $10 day passes and a $30 annual Discover Passes - best go back to the drawing board. So far that plan isn't raising enough money; the result is a major threat to the future of the state parks system.
Opponents of the Keystone XL pipeline: Be careful what you wish for.
Must second the letter written about the Nov. 11 article about the lack of compensation yet to be receive for the Merchant Marines who so deserve it.
As residents of the 2nd Congressional District of Washington, we have a concern about what we see as an accident ready to happen in Whatcom County.
The recent debacle of Penn State's handling of allegations of sexual misconduct within its football department is a tragedy regarding the young children who could have been protected. It is also a reminder that leadership steps must be taken to protect the integrity of sports institutions.
I believe the driving force behind the current Occupy movement is none other than the nation's most famous community organizer, Barack Hussein Obama. I believe he has been stoking the fires of revolution since the day he arrived at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.
In the history of the world, I believe not one large corporation in an unregulated economy has ever put human or environmental health on equal footing with profit extraction. If left unfettered, they will amass huge wealth on the backs of a poisoned populace, and alongside a barren landscape.
America has demonstrated its generosity to the world through the humanitarian and development assistance we've sent to the poorest and most vulnerable. With Washington, D.C., focused inward on the deficit, this tradition is at risk.
I'm all for cracking down on Wall Street, as well as corporate corruption, etc. But I'm against the methods used by the occupiers. Specifically in putting up tents in city parks, and the ensuing problems with crime and health issues that only anger local authorities and small businesses. You can still have a viable movement without the tents, and instead use marches and educational public awareness events, and speakers, during the day. And it could give a good forum for people to push their choices for office, which should be a main emphasis, really.
Thanksgiving is a loaded word.
Many things in this world have contagious properties: HIV/AIDs, influenza, laughter and revolts for justice. But revolutionary contagion is not new. After assisting the U.S. with our revolution, the French returned home with newfound inspiration for their own. In December, 2010, Tunisia began protesting - it took only a month before Algeria and Egypt joined, creating the Arab Spring. As the U.S.' Occupy movement expanded to 82 countries, I believe the world is joining hands to fight against economic and social inequality.
Is anyone besides me sitting back and enjoying what I see as the never-ending comedy freak show being put on by the GOP candidates for president that has been going on, month after month?
The current administration has launched an effort to improve school lunches.
Congratulations to mayor-elect Kelli Linville.
If the Occupy Wall Street protesters feel the need to move on, I have a few suggestions.
Way to go voters. You eliminated 1,000 family-wage liquor store jobs and their medical benefits, created hundreds of empty stores around the state, knocked out hundreds more wholesaling jobs and the accompanying revenues from those businesses, and handed Costco execs millions in profits. Now low-paid retail clerks will add liquor to the items they scan with no pay increase or significant staff hours to show for it. I believe privatization of public assets hurts us all and that corporate pirates win again. We gotta stop helping the scalawags do this to us.
I believe the GOP in Congress wants to count tomato paste on pizza as a vegetable in school lunches. I believe it's another example of the lobbyists' ownership of today's GOP. Drop your allegiance to a party that has become the toady of big business. It's not your father's party anymore!
If you are a senior citizen on Medicare and think you want the Affordable Health Care Act (commonly known as "Obamacare") repealed, I believe you should think again. It is already helping seniors with their Medicare prescription drug costs and now offers free yearly wellness exams. If the law is repealed, all the items listed below will go away and the doughnut hole will come back.
As Kelli Linville celebrates her victory, she would be smart to pause and consider what caused Pike to lose. Could the reason be that he tried to ram red-light cameras down the throats of voters? Did what I see as his unilateral decision-making and disregard for the democratic process cause his downfall? After deciding to forgo a previously scheduled public hearing, Pike's dealing with American Traffic Solutions came into focus. I believe voters sent the resounding message that they do not want cameras. Pike's support for traffic cameras and interaction with ATS probably caused him to lose the election. Will Linville remember the message that voters have clearly sent? It would be ill-advised to decide that the mayor is smarter than the voters and can disregard them. Pike made that mistake. If Linville does the same, the voters will not forget.
At a time of large deficits and national debt, the Republicans in Congress refuse to raise taxes on those most able to pay. It is interesting to examine the earlier rates for couples filing jointly.
Washington is part of an interconnected, regional bulk power system, and consumers are dependent on coal, natural gas, and nuclear plants in other states. Moreover, much of the hydroelectric generation in Washington is owned by the federal government and operated on behalf of customers in multiple states.
THE BELLINGHAM HERALD
It should come as no surprise that the former U.S. Attorney in Seattle has endorsed an effort to legalize marijuana for recreational use in Washington state. During her tenure, Kate Pflaumer, a former sorority sister of Hillary Clinton, refused to file federal cases on marijuana smugglers captured by U.S. Customs and Border Patrol agents on our northern border in Whatcom County by steadily increasing the "threshold amount" of seized marijuana required for federal prosecution. By the time she left her position, the threshold amount measured in hundreds of pounds.
PETER CALLAGHAN
If Gov. Chris Gregoire gets buy-in from the Legislature - as she very likely will - we'll all get to vote on a temporary tax increase next March.
After 24 years as Whatcom County auditor, Shirley Forslof retires at the end of this year. Among her many accomplishments, Shirley and her staff have incorporated considerable transparency and citizen participation in her office activities, particularly of those of the elections division, now recognized as one of the best in the nation. If you have a minute, please address a short note of thanks for dedicated service to her.
I have a suggestion for the congressional budget committee that has nothing to do with the compromises on taxes, spending cuts, etc., but that would, in a small way, recover some of the respect for government. This compromise would be one that is very small in the scale of the trillions of dollars that are involved.
After a long and difficult election, The Bellingham Herald didn't feel compelled to at least congratulate Kelli Linville on her victory? How about recognizing her honesty, integrity and dignity during this controversial election. This only proves that she has what it takes to lead Bellingham in the proper direction.
Do you think the fact that Rob Murray, the husband of Sen. Patty Murray, works for SSA Marine will have any effect on SSA Marine obtaining approval to build and operate a major shipping terminal at Cherry Point?
There is a question I don't believe Barack Obama will want to answer during his campaign for re-election: Are Americans better off than they were when he took office? So what does he do? I believe he blames everybody but himself: George Bush, Europe, Japan, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, earthquakes, hurricanes and of course the wealthiest 1 percent.
According to IRS data the 18 highest paid employees at PeaceHealth nonprofit hospitals received a total combined compensation of $11.6 million in 2009. PeaceHealth President Alan Yordy received $1,169,000, a 31 percent increase over his 2008 compensation.
Both the Republican party and the city of Bellingham should sit up and realize what our Whatcom County Council has already realized. It's not a continuous fence along the Mexican border that we need. What I believe we need is for all employers in this country, including the city of Bellingham, to verify employment eligibility for all new hires using E-verify online!
In response to "For Hastings," in our modern-day world it has become obvious that we humans need to start putting our planet's wellbeing before many of the other conveniences that we enjoy every day - such as cars.
By now we are all too familiar with the sexual abuse charges brought against Jerry Sandusky, former Penn State assistant football coach, and the resulting media frenzy.
While for some the big news of Nov. 18 was the opening of Mt. Baker Ski Area, others were outside braving a temperature around freezing for a very different reason. While a group of at least 15 community leaders and activists held a meeting at Rep. Rick Larsen's office in the Bellingham Towers with his district director Jill McKinnie, a supporting group of 200 protesters waited outside for 45 minutes or more.
Can we bypass some of the stage managers in the parties and the media? While acting in a play, I realized that professionals in most politics, sports, religions, business or theater are managed from backstage as they perform their routines for the public. I want politics to be more democratic and respond to the people with liberty and justice for all.

The opinion written by the News Tribune on page A4 of Nov. 20's Bellingham Herald needs a reply insofar as the opinion calls Medicare-supported colonoscopy for those over 75 a largess. Colon cancer is an inheritable disease and it can be prevented only by removing polyps from the colon during a colonoscopy.

A writer Nov. 23 claimed the Obama administration is the driving force behind the Wall Street protests. Sorry sir, I don't believe this so. There is a great diversity in the movement; my husband and I are in our late 60s and we have been around long enough to believe this goes far beyond class warfare.
Aren't you glad that Occupy U.S. is not in Lynden or Bellingham, with, I believe, drugs, sex, violence by a bunch of unemployed low lifes who have a chance for employment, but choose to do nothing but raise hell that will get them there sooner than they think?
I believe Black Friday sales are ruining Thanksgiving. Many people travel from places near and far to be with their loved ones on this holiday. But, with retailers counting on the commercialism of the sacred Christmas holiday to boost their fourth-quarter earnings, the push is on to start the sales earlier and earlier. Many places are even open on Thanksgiving Day, while others opened much earlier than usual this year for their Black Friday sales, counting on the materialism of shoppers to bring in the dollars.
After seeing the police reaction to the peaceful protest at U.C. Davis, I was appalled. As a retired police officer I was ashamed. I think that every one of the officers involved should be investigated and prosecuted for his/her involvement in what I believe to be illegal activity. Furthermore, I think that each police supervisor and each school officer who ordered this pepper-spray activity should also be prosecuted and then removed as an employee of the school.
Lummi Nation and its members rely on land at Cherry Point and the adjacent marine waters for commercial, ceremonial and subsistence fisheries necessary to perpetuate the Lummi schelangen ("way of life").
I am a 57-year-old woman and I am writing this in regards to what I believe to be the unacknowledged state of middle-aged America that is "broke" due to the state of the economy.
Before you believe or agree to anything a politician says please consult the Useful Dictionary of Political Jargon: ox*y*mo*ron/ic: A temporary tax increase.
What would it cost you if same-sex marriage was legal in Washington state? Would it take money from your bank account? Would it change your relationship/marriage? Would it do anything to detract from your life? Would it cause you anything other than some mental or emotional discomfort? Would it do anything to your relationship with your God? My wife and I have been married for 31 years, we have been together for 35. There is nothing in the concept of same-sex marriage that would change our relationship. We do not care about the sexual habits of others, what goes on in their bedrooms is not a concern of ours. Since half of marriages today already end in divorce, I am not sure how same-sex marriage would ruin the institution of marriage. Anything that contributes to even the least bit of stability in family life is, or could possibly be, considered a good thing. I have heard that there is an organization that is starting to push for Washington state to make same-sex marriages legal. It is time for this state to move into the 21st century in this area. I believe that all those who truly believe in the idea of equal human rights should do what they can to show their support for same-sex marriage.
Did you ever wonder what politicians are thankful for? I believe it is the short memory of the people who elect them and the questions that reporters we trust to watch-dog them fail to ask.
I think raising the state tax just for a short period of time is something that needs to be done. That would prevent further cuts in programs in our state. If anything things need to be cut or axed, I believe it should be the program where DSHS will help out people who are not here legally. When a person gets a form to fill out for medical it states on the form. Cutting that program would save a lot of money. And I guess Sen. Mike Hewitt, R-Walla-Walla, thinks that money grows on trees. He really needs to have a reality check. I and my wife will vote yes on a small and temporary state tax hike to prevent further cuts.
Seventy years ago today, a peaceful Sunday morning at Pearl Harbor turned to carnage and panic as Japanese aircraft roared through the Hawaiian skies and hot ammunition ripped into American ships. Caught by surprise, America lost 2,388 military personnel and civilians. The fuse that would send America into the Second World War had been ignited.
In October, a British Columbia professor sent a chill through Northwest fishery circles. He claimed to have found traces of a potentially devastating virus in two wild sockeye taken from waters in northern British Columbia.
I'm writing in response to the article, "Midnight openings make for a busy Black Friday in Bellingham."
As a boater with a boat in Squalicum Harbor, I would like to express my disappointment in Chief Boyd for using the Bellingham Fire Boat as a budget football.
The United States is by law a republic: a state in which supreme power resides in the people entitled to vote and is exercised by representatives. Article 2, section 10 of the U.S. Constitution says: "No state shall ... emit bills of credit; make anything but gold and silver coin a tender in payment of debts."
I was pleasantly surprised and frankly shocked to read in The Bellingham Herald Nov. 27 to see the Associated Press story by Mike Baker fact-check our governor's continued claims of having to cut the state's budget. The report clarifies the "cuts" she refers to are actually reductions in projected increases in state spending.
The Mt. Baker Group of the Sierra Club congratulates Kelli Linville on her hard-won victory in the race for mayor of Bellingham, and thanks Dan Pike for his service to the community.
Shame on Mayor Bromley of Sumas, speaking to The Bellingham Herald as if he had done his due diligence in representing the voice of the people. We the people are not quietly accepting of a restaurant using sex to sell food. Although the theme of Bikini Island may be legal, the repercussions of the breakdown of the family are notable.
It's past time to fairly balance the budget. I believe it's long past time for a state income tax!
One of the casualties of the recent budget cuts at PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center is the elimination of LifeQuest, the community health education department for the hospital.
Even as an avid supporter of the Occupy protests around the country, I am having a lot of trouble getting behind Occupy Bellingham.
Some pundits are hoping President Obama can define a new course for the economy that works better for the 99 percent.
Sales from Black Friday this year have totaled $11.4 billion at retail stores and malls.
As school board members, we have the important job of listening to constituents to ensure that our local public schools accurately reflect the values of our community, provide outstanding learning experiences for all children and produce future-ready graduates.
I'm very concerned about the impending coal port and the local and global implications if it gets built.
SSA Marine must be nervous about its proposed Gateway Pacific Terminal.
I am fortunate to work at one of the best hospitals in our region, PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center.
I think that under the circumstances of our economy, it isn't a horrible fate to have to pay a half-cent more on sales tax if that were to mean less cuts towards education and other positive social programs.
In response to Marilyn Marchione's article, "Apple juice can pose a health risk," I find it interesting how misleading certain products like juices can be. They will say things such as "all natural, no sugar added, and 100 percent juice." What they don't tell you is how much sugar is already in the juice or the calorie count. Especially when grocery shopping for children, people need to have increased caution with their purchases, and should check the actual ingredients and health information on the back. You cannot simply rely on what the marketing on the package is telling you.
It is so gracious for Paul Leuthold to extend gratuities to mayor-elect Kelli Linville in an attempt to rebuke our quite capable Mayor Dan Pike. I believe Dan Pike did a good job and his removal of Leuthold was the appropriate action to be taken. We are now to be beholden to other lobbies presumed to pursue the people's interest.
After reading the article about the vandalism by the three teenaged boys at Pioneer Park, I must say that a little "Singapore disciplinee" (caning) sounds appropriate in this case. These boys should be required to pay, and pay dearly, for their actions. Shame on them.
After reading the article "Don't be too picky in courting new Whatcom jobs, says WWU economist," I was extremely disappointed. Labeling the focus on supporting small business and environmentally friendly practices as trendy and unrealistic seems a bit unfair, and I for one think that the renewed interest in these areas is a positive development. Although I agree that it is important to create jobs, I think that "embracing business period" and "creating a culture of yes" are very broad and potentially dangerous statements. In the past, a lot of damage has been done by not being picky enough.
I recently had a debate in my communications class at WWU about the Cherry Point coal terminal and came across John Stark's Aug. 4 article about the incident involving SSA Marine destroying wetlands to help with transportation. What really grinds my gears is this idea that big companies like this expect to disturb natural, long-standing habitats as well as dissolve the environmental reputation that Bellingham has worked so hard for just to get a quick buck. I believe what SSA Marine plans to do is unacceptable and rather distasteful, especially when they know they can walk away with a slap on the wrist and an insincere apology. I hope that the good people of Bellingham can see through the corporate manipulation to maintain the serenity and overall well-being of their home.
In response to "Wenatchee arena bailout votes lacking, I at first found it interesting that The Bellingham Herald would post an article about my hometown. But as I read on it made more sense. It is unfortunate that the Town Toyota Center is in so much debt. The concept and construction of this arena were happening during the end of the economic boom and many people had high hopes for the arena. But then, of course, the economy took a dive and no one could afford to go to the shows and Wenatchee Wild games. If the legislators do not vote in favor of a "bail-out" though, like the article said, it may be detrimental to the entire state of Washington by "making it more difficult for local governments to borrow." Just thought I would re-iterate this important piece of information.
Why did Ginger White need an attorney on stage while she told the "truth" about Herman Cain last week? She needed one when she lost a libel suit months earlier. If her "story" this time is true and Cain cheated his wife and lied to us, then we can grieve for Mrs. Cain and be relieved that the ugly process of vetting a presidential candidate is done in his case and hope for thorough presidential vetting in the future.
I believe the city of Bellingham and Whatcom County administration should not support or use E-Verify.
Baa, baa, mayor. Have red light cams a poll?
Sometimes we fail to recognize the importance of a person's work until after his or her life has ended. Richard Grossman, who died in November, is a good example. He was a gifted attorney who was puzzled by a simple question: "Why do even the most vital citizen movements often fizzle out, while the power of corporations keeps increasing?" To find an answer Grossman and a few others organized a research group; in time they discovered what Adam Smith, the Boston Tea Party colonialists, and the framers already knew: Private corporations must be controlled lest they subvert the democracy they purport to cherish.
The idea sweeping the world because I believe it's so obviously just is a "Robin Hood" tax on financial transactions. It's a concept that places some of the burden for recovery on the financial market place, rightly so I believe.
People need to read history. In pre-war Germany, Hitler secretly organized groups of students under various good-sounding titles to go to the streets and disrupt the general, everyday operations of the country.
In response to a letter printed in the letters to the editor on Nov. 30, I do not believe the Occupy movement is being sponsored by or involved with President Obama or George Soros.
I read with some interest the letter regarding the wonders of Obama Care and the "free" annual wellness exam for seniors. It was suggested that readers also get involved with the re-election of the Democratic Party, and Obama.
